Order: Gasterosteiformes, Family: Gasterosteidae
Form: Total length - 5 cm to 7 cm
Distribution: Spring-water ponds with clean water in the northeastern part of Shiga Prefecture and in the southwestern part of Gifu Prefecture. They are found in areas where springs feed the habitat with clean water. They are cold-water fish and cannot live in places where the water temperature exceeds 20℃.
Behavior: During the breeding season, males are territorial and build tunnel-shaped nests among water plants to attract females to spawn. The male continues to protect the eggs until they hatch.
