Form: Total length - 4.5 cm to 6.0 cm
Distribution: Kanto region in Japan (except for Ibaraki Prefecture)
Behavior: This fish used to be common in the Kanto region, including Tokyo, in Japan, but its population has been decreasing drastically due to habitat changes caused by river renovation and the increase in fallow rice paddies. It is now found only in very limited waters in Chiba and Tochigi prefectures. It is a rare species, but it is very hardy and easy to breed. This fish has been designated a Japanese National Natural Treasure.
